Before I came to Kelley, I worked in finance at a large consumer packaged goods company where I learned Kelley was one of the top schools for marketing and the CMA was one of the main reasons.
I came to Kelley to be part of the CMA and to make the switch from finance to marketing. I decided to switch from finance to marketing because I wanted to be more involved in the brands and categories that I was supporting. I wanted to become the driver, the individual to help shape the direction of the brand.
As in finance, analysis of data is a large part of a marketer's role. The marketer needs to be able to synthesize large amounts of data and compile it in a way that tells the story of the brand's performance. The marketer is also responsible for the P&L (profit and loss statement). Understanding the line items in the P&L and how they relate to each other helps the marketing manager make smarter decisions in managing the brand.
Starting the first week of class, the CMA offers many opportunities to network with companies. From roundtables to our first Academy week where we traveled throughout the Midwest, each interaction has helped me to gain a better understanding of the companies and where I will best fit. I couldn’t believe how many brand managers and executives from P&G, General Mills, Nestlé, Kraft, and ConAgra have spoken to us. It shows the strong connection between Kelley and the top CPG companies.
