On the CMA

As a career switcher, I knew that the Consumer Marketing Academy would provide me with the best exposure to the marketing world. Outside of the classroom, the CMA has introduced me to a new network and given me an in-depth marketing education that you can’t get in the regular classroom. I now feel I have a leading edge on the industry as I prepare to enter my internship.

My Bio

Undergraduate: Gettysburg College, History

Hometown: Scarsdale, N.Y.

Internship: Major League Soccer, New York City

I started my career in the nonprofit and sports world—I was a program coordinator for the Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project at Disabled Sports USA. I do feel a business background can aid nonprofits, from the overall background basics of creating an organization with a business plan and financials, to providing a different perspective on how to deal with competition and to grow the organization. Having a business background in the nonprofit arena allows one to help the organization build a foundation and hopefully flourish.

My internship will be a great test as to whether I would like to pursue a long-term career in the sports industry. Having started my career in the field and growing up as an athlete it has always been an interest of mine. But by returning to school and having the opportunity to intern for a sports organization I think it will not only help me in deciding if I'd like to pursue the field but if so in what capacity as well as activity.

The CMA provides a safe environment to explore the marketing arena. All current and former members of the CMA and the Kelley faculty have provided me a wonderful support network. Never have I encountered such a generous group of people who are so helpful and encouraging!

The CMA has also introduced me to an irreplaceable network of marketers from top companies across the globe. Having the opportunity to work on an actual marketing project during the spring gave me a great perspective of what to anticipate during my summer internship and beyond, as well as show how much I’d learned throughout the year. Pairing that opportunity with engaging and leading industry executives teaching us, and the CMA was a perfect choice for me.
