Project Management Certificate Program
Overview
Even with experienced project managers at the helm, good projects frequently fail. Traditional project management practices oftentimes do not address the complexities and risks of today’s business challenges. To deliver these desired results, project leaders need to master best-known practices and acquire new skills that can yield innovative approaches for managing these complex systems.
The Indiana University Project Management Certificate Program provides the advanced skills needed to execute complex projects effectively. The cutting-edge curriculum blends academic theory and practical applications to ensure that graduates are well prepared to deliver aggressive results under diverse challenging situations. PMI Registered Educational Provider
Kelley School of Business Executive Degree Programs is a Registered Education Provider (R.E.P) for the Project Management Institute (PMI). Having met PMI’s rigorous quality criteria for course content, instructor qualifications, and instructional design, R.E.P’s provide the project management training necessary for participants to earn and maintain Project Management Professional (PMP)® and Program Management Professional (PgMP)® credentials. Who Should Apply?
The certificate is specially designed for experienced business and technical professionals who have been actively engaged in projects as managers or core team members. Certified project managers are especially encouraged to apply, as they will acquire new knowledge and skills beyond current industry standards. Senior managers and business executives who supervise a portfolio of projects will also benefit from the crucial insights and skills taught in the certificate.
Program Structure and Delivery
Because it’s designed for busy professionals, the program will be delivered in a blended format with face-to-face instruction, video conferencing, and web-based learning. Throughout the program, participants engaged in action-oriented learning including case discussions, interactive exercises, applied projects, and team-based problem solving.
- Typical certificate duration is one year
- The program consists of seven courses, taught sequentially
- Except for the first course, the duration of each course is six weeks.
- The first course is twelve weeks in duration
- Three in-residence sessions are held, lasting between 2 and 3 days
Certificate Credits - 12 Graduate Credits
- The certificate will be issued by Indiana University
- Up to 12 credits could be transferred to the Kelley School of Business Executive MBA program (subject to admission requirements)

Understand the best-known methods and adaptive processes for managing projects under uncertainty and rapid change. Acquire tools for uncovering customer requirements to avoid costly rework and scope expansion. Establish a strong foundation for planning, scheduling, and executing projects according to well-known practice standards in any environment.

- Innovation, Risk, and Project Lifecycles (1.5 credit hours)
- Apply innovation concepts and tools to develop practical and creative solutions for project-based work. Learn how to define, measure, track, and mitigate project uncertainties and risks. Explore leading practices in project risk management and learn how these innovative approaches yield robust project results. Explore different project lifecycle models such as agile and spiral and how to successfully plan and manage with a diverse toolkit of project lifecycle methodologies.
- Apply innovation concepts and tools to develop practical and creative solutions for project-based work. Learn how to define, measure, track, and mitigate project uncertainties and risks. Explore leading practices in project risk management and learn how these innovative approaches yield robust project results. Explore different project lifecycle models such as agile and spiral and how to successfully plan and manage with a diverse toolkit of project lifecycle methodologies.
- Conflict Resolution and Negotiation (1.5 credit hours)
- Develop the skills to become a skilled negotiator and manager of conflict. Learn different conflict resolution styles/strategies and when and how to apply these tools to resolve conflict and deal with disruptive behaviors. Understand negotiation processes and why they success and fail in different contexts. Develop your personal negotiation and conflict management style to more competently and more confidently engage in complex professional interactions.
- Project Management Financial Mastery (1.5 credit hours)
- Understand how to apply corporate finance and investment analysis to projects. Develop the ability to communicate effectively about a project’s financial impact on the organization. Identify strategies for improving a project’s financial performance from their proposal phase to executing the project. Learn project portfolio financial evaluation techniques. Identify key metrics and financial ratios as applied to project-based organizations.

- Learn cutting-edge team project leadership and management skills grounded in theory and practical applications. Experience first hand the dynamics of team-based problem solving and how to apply specific tools to move a project team to the next level of performance. Learn strategies for managing geographically distributed project teams working across time zones and different cultures.

- Project Scheduling and Resource Management (1.5 credit hours)
- Acquire the knowledge and skills to define and schedule project work to achieve the desired results from senior management, customer, key stakeholders, and the project team. Learn advanced methodologies for scheduling project work and assigning critical resources to met schedule, cost, and quality objectives. Explore scheduling and resource management for agile projects. Provides an understanding of how to schedule multiple projects and achieve portfolio objectives.
- Acquire the knowledge and skills to define and schedule project work to achieve the desired results from senior management, customer, key stakeholders, and the project team. Learn advanced methodologies for scheduling project work and assigning critical resources to met schedule, cost, and quality objectives. Explore scheduling and resource management for agile projects. - Project Execution and Performance Management (1.5 credit hours)
- Learn how to anticipate and navigate the challenges of executing a project plan under demanding conditions and across organizational boundaries. Obtain the knowledge and skills to apply project execution methodologies such as earned value management. Define key project performance metrics beyond the traditional schedule, cost, and quality measurements. Examine the various tools and techniques for executing different life cycle methodologies (e.g. agile and spiral).
