Out to Dinner
Building relationships with faculty outside of class is an important aspect of undergraduate development. The Undergraduate Student Engagement Program is now offering Direct Admit freshmen the unique opportunity to have dinner with some of Kelley’s faculty members.
Each month, a group of Direct Admit freshmen will be given the opportunity to invite a Kelley School of Business professor to a catered dinner on campus or at a Bloomington restaurant. In this setting, students will have a wonderful opportunity to engage with faculty in a casual atmosphere outside of class. A fully-catered dinner will be provided.
Students interested in taking their professor to dinner should complete the online application, which will become available each fall. Students will be selected at random and are eligible to attend one dinner per year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How does this program work?
A: If you’re interested in participating in the Out to Dinner program, click on the apply button and fill in your contact information. Each month, we randomly choose 30-40 students to attend that month’s dinner. If you get chosen, you will be emailed and have the option to accept or decline. If you accept, you may choose a Kelley professor and a friend to bring with you.
Q: I got invited to participate in a dinner, but I can’t come that day. What do I do?
A: Follow the RSVP link in the email and decline your invitation. Your name will be placed back on the list and you have the chance to get selected again. If you do nothing, your name will be removed.
Q: It says I have to invite a Kelley professor, but none of my instructors can attend on this date. What should I do?
A: You are welcome to reach out to any Kelley professor, regardless of whether they are teaching one of your current courses. If you can’t find someone to bring, email firstname.lastname@example.org and we can help. You are also welcome to invite your Kelley Academic Advisor. While we would prefer that you bring a Kelley professor, you are welcome to invite any of your IU instructors if you can’t find a Kelley faculty/staff member to bring.
Q: The email says I can bring a friend. Do they have to be a Kelley student?
A: We would prefer that they are a student majoring in business, but they do not have to be admitted to the Kelley School of Business.
Q: What happens at the dinner?
A: Everyone invited will arrive at the designated restaurant and will be served dinner. You are not responsible for any costs related to the provided dinner, unless you order something extra. You will be given the parameters for the menu before arrival. There will not be any formal presentation at the dinner. You are welcome to depart once your group is finished with the meal. Typically the dinner will last from 5:30-7:30 pm.
Q: I don’t have a car on campus. How can I get there?
A: We try to choose restaurant locations that are within walking distance or accessible by bus. However, if transportation is an issue for you, email email@example.com and we can help.
Q: Can I attend more than one dinner per year?
A: Students may only attend one dinner per year. After a student attends a dinner, their name will be removed from the list. However, if you are invited by another classmate, you are welcome to attend as their guest.
Q: Why should I participate in the Out to Dinner program?
A: First of all, it’s a lot of fun! It’s a great way to meet other students and faculty as well. Getting to know your professors is going to help you succeed throughout your college career. You never know when you might need a letter of recommendation or advice on choosing a major. Knowing a faculty member is a wonderful asset that can help you along the way!
