BUS-G 256 Emerging Economies
with spring break study tours to Chile, China, and Ghana

Kelley’s three-credit-hour emerging economies course (BUS G256), taught by business economics & public policy faculty, is open only to admitted Kelley students and LAMP students with a minimum 3.0 GPA and sophomore status or higher. The course counts toward Kelley’s international dimension requirement (1996 degree) and could also be used as an international business elective.
In the course, students will be introduced to the general notion of emerging economies, their successes and challenges, as well as country-specific information, both business and cultural. While some classes will be taught in large group settings, others will be small groups focused on the particular country to which students will be travelling. Some language training will also be provided. Students will then spend spring break overseas (March 9-17, 2013) visiting businesses, meeting with government and university officials, and touring cultural sites. The selected countries for 2013 will include Chile, China, and Ghana. Approximately 20 students will travel to each country. When applying for the course, students can rank their preference for a country but are not guaranteed their first choice.
The $3,000 program fee will cover airfare, travel to and from the airport, hotel, breakfasts, visa (if necessary), and travel insurance. Students will be responsible for lunches, dinners, and any other purchases they wish to make on the trip. Students will also be asked to contribute money to group meals if the food in their particular country would not be safe in a non-group setting. They will also be asked to contribute money to tip tour guides and bus drivers. Students should budget approximately $30 per day (not including shopping). In addition, students are responsible for pre-trip expenses such as passports, immunizations, and medications, if necessary.
Keep in mind that these are academic trips. Students will be expected to behave and dress in a professional manner throughout the trip. Participation and conduct will be part of the course grade.
Scholarships
There are two scholarship opportunities for students interested in the emerging economies course with spring break study tour.
The Kelley Office of International Programs has a limited number of scholarships for business students in the Emerging Economies Program. To apply, students must turn in a hard copy of the Kelley EE Scholarship Application with two essays and a printout of their financial summary from OneStart. Students should turn all materials in a sealed envelope to BU 218 by Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at noon.
Students with a 3.4 GPA or higher are strongly encouraged to apply for the Emerging Markets Hutton International Experience Program (HIEP) Scholarship. Use checklist two. The deadline for this scholarship is noon on October 30, 2012, at noon.
The Application
BUS-G 256 is open to admitted Kelley students and LAMP students with a minimum 3.0 GPA and sophomore status or higher. Students will be notified of their acceptance and to which country by October 10, 2012. They will then have until October 17, 2012 to submit the required acceptance forms and thus commit to the financial obligations of the course. A non-refundable $500 deposit will be charged to the student’s bursar account on October 24, 2012. The balance of $2,500 will be charged to the student’s bursar account on November 14, 2012.
