A Rising Star

Like any successful young Kelley alum living in New York City, Bryan Glanzberg can offer lots of advice: how to survive I-Core, how to ace an interview, where to get the best meal in the city. After all, this graduate of the School's 3/2 MBA in Accounting program is a rising star in Ernst & Young's Transaction Advisory Services, Transaction Tax.

But it's this advice for new graduates that truly highlights his commitment to Kelley: “The most important thing is to constantly give back to the school,” he says. “Kelley is only as good as its students. At the end of the day, you need to make sure you're leaving IU a better place than it was when you got there.”

Glanzberg practices what he preaches. While working on his MBA, he co-founded (with the help of classmates Dan Gofman and Adam Jones) GAP Connect, a group dedicated to networking incoming students, current students, and alumni of the Graduate Accounting Programs (GAP) 3/2 MBA program. Although he loved the program's curriculum and career opportunities, he believed there was a student disconnect. “The 3/2 MBA program is so young, and there are so many people going into it, that there's a huge gap between current first- and second-year students—we needed to get them talking,” he says. “That first year, there were about 12 mentors helping first-year students. Now there are definitely conversations going on.”

Endless Opportunities

And he couldn't be happier. After all, this is a guy who believes he owes his career to Kelley. He's had three internships as a Kelley student: two at Ernst & Young in New York and one at KPMG's London office. After his final E&Y internship in 2006, the firm was so impressed with him that he had a job offer within 10 days—as a senior associate. “If I didn't have this Kelley 3/2 MBA degree, I wouldn't be here,” says Glanzberg. “I'm one of the first two people from IU in this practice, and I'm trying to pave the way.”

Glanzberg advises private equity clients and Fortune 500 companies on the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions, internal restructuring, and other various tax consulting areas. “The best thing about my job is being able to influence decisions that companies are making and actually have a real impact,” says Glanzberg. “I love it! My advice to new Kelley grads going in to the job market is to make sure you have an open mind. A lot of people jump at first job offer they get without realizing the other opportunities that Kelley will provide them.”

“I was interested in business growing up. My father has been in sales his entire career, and my sister is an accountant. I started to realize that accounting is the backbone of every company—that everything really revolves around accounting and the financials.”
