“We have found that the quality of the graduates coming out of the Kelley program have the skills and experience that we can further hone as they prepare to lead Carlisle into the future.”
From its beginnings in 1917 as an inner tube purveyor, Carlisle Tire and Rubber Company has grown from 30 employees in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, to the globally diversified Carlisle Companies Inc., with nearly 12,000 employees worldwide and $3.6 billion in net sales annually.
Rapid International Growth
“Our business has grown rapidly over the past decade, and as we prepare for similar growth in the years to come, we will need highly skilled managers to lead the company,” says Dave Roberts, MBA’78, Carlisle’s chairman, president, and CEO since 2007. “We have found that the quality of the graduates coming out of the Kelley program have the skills and experience that we can further hone as they prepare to lead Carlisle into the future.”
Because of Roberts, who serves on the Kelley School of Business Dean’s Council and is a Life Member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, Carlisle helps support the Kelley School and has partnered with the Kelley’s Business Marketing Academy (BMA) since 2009, providing experiential learning opportunities for MBA students.
On one consulting project for Carlisle, the entire BMA Academy traveled to San Paulo to complete a Brazilian market analysis, developing an international business acumen that sets Kelley students apart from their peers at other institutions.
“Carlisle and, specifically, Dave Roberts, have played a significant role in the success of the Business Marketing Academy over the past five years,” says Fred Roedl, BMA director. “In addition to being a major financial sponsor for Academy activities, Carlisle has recruited BMA students for both full time and internship positions and provided many meaningful consulting projects, from which students gain valuable business experience.”
Through decentralized operating companies led by entrepreneurial management teams in five business segments—Carlisle Construction Materials, Carlisle Brake & Friction, Carlisle Transportation Products, Carlisle Interconnect Technologies, and Carlisle FoodService—Carlisle delivers innovative product solutions to customer challenges in niche markets including commercial roofing, energy, agriculture, lawn and garden, mining and construction equipment, aerospace and electronics, dining and food delivery, and healthcare.
“Several Kelley BMA graduates have been promoted within Carlisle to positions of key managerial responsibility,” says Roedl. “I am also personally grateful to Dave for his generosity in taking the time to travel to Bloomington and speak to students within the classroom. Carlisle is a true partner with the MBA Business Marketing Academy in every sense of the word.”
