International Business Operations

- Prerequisite: MBA Core. For those not in the MBA program, graduate student status (permission required).
This course extends the knowledge gained in D503 and is a logical follow-up to it. Whereas D503 focused on the environments of international business, D504 concentrates directly on the management of multinational firms. As such, the students are placed in the role of the decision-makers responsible for solving the myriad of practical problems resulting from a globalized and highly interconnected business environment. In preparation for operating on the front lines of international business, D504 students will be responsible for acquiring a sharp understanding of a) the role of a global manager, b) how countries view the multinational firm ad how a multinational firm evaluates countries, c) the current interest in emerging economies, d) evaluating and managing collaborative strategies, e) structuring and controlling the multinational firm, f) global marketing and manufacturing strategies, and g) developing effective international human resource strategies. Taking D503 prior to D504 is useful but not required.
A stimulating aspect of this course is the incorporation of various current topics from the popular business press (Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Business Week, Fortune, New York Times, etc.). In addition to comprehensive coverage of traditional international business theories and concepts, students will gain a better understanding of “how the world economy works” and of “what in the world is going on right now.”
