This course is dedicated to learning about the process of how distressed companies are turned around. Learning about this process is important as corporate turnarounds are becoming a much more common phenomenon and MBA students may be exposed to this as a manager, consultant, or creditor. There are three segments to the course. First, students are exposed to the world of turnaround management and the skill of diagnosing a distressed situation. The second part of the course explores critical short-term turnaround activities, primarily cash control, negotiations with creditors, and consideration of bankruptcy. The third topic is the recovery stage which involves shifts in corporate, marketing, and operational strategies. The course is taught through lecture, case studies, guest speakers, and an ongoing live field project. Cases involve real companies facing turnaround situations. Team-based projects are also involved.
