IU Basketball and Big Ten Athletics

Indiana is synonymous with basketball, and Assembly Hall is the place to watch basketball in Indiana. IU’s boisterous fans are the best in the country (in our humble opinion), cheering on the Hoosiers as they battle our rivals in the Big Ten. IU Athletics includes 24 varsity sports in all, from football and basketball to wrestling and field hockey. The Hoosiers are a perennial powerhouse in swimming and diving and men’s soccer.

Of course, Sports Illustrated on Campus named Bloomington the No. 6 college sports town for more than just varsity sports. Our Division of Recreational Sports is one of the best such programs in the country, offering a variety of intramural and club sports, exercise options, and topnotch facilities: the HPER (pronounced “hyper”) and Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC), each with several basketball courts, running tracks, and more.

Last but certainly not least are the Little 500 student bicycle races. Started in 1951 to raise funds for student scholarships, the Little 500 has evolved into the premier intramural collegiate cycling event in the nation. It now includes a men’s race, a women’s race, and a whole weekend of activities that’s been dubbed “The World’s Greatest College Weekend.” The Little 5 even inspired the 1979 Academy Award–winning film Breaking Away.
